Vintage 1970s "FREE BILLY DEAN SMITH -- FREE ALL OF US" Cause Pin Button Pinback. 1 5/8 photo button, although no maker's name.
Very very small bump on top of button next to the 2nd E in the FREE before BILLY. In 1969 Smith was drafted into the Army.
In spite of his war opposition, he respected his family's wishes that he not go to jail and he was sent to Vietnam in October, 1970. On March 15, 1971 a fragmentation grenade exploded in an officer's barracks in Bien Hoa, killing two Lieutenants and wounding a third. Smith's commander Captain Rigby arrived on the scene with his 1st Sergeant and they decided they were the intended victims and that the logical guilty party could only be Pvt. A 20-month ordeal followed but eventually Smith was found innocent.
